# Unlinked brand mentions

Unlinked brand mentions explained: what Google says about mentions without links, why they matter for AI visibility, and how to turn them into backlinks.

Digital PR glossary

## Unlinked brand mentions

Unlinked brand mentions are places online where a brand, product or person is named without a hyperlink to their website. They are common in news coverage. Google has said they do not pass PageRank, but they build awareness, can often be turned into links and shape what AI assistants say about a brand.

## Do unlinked mentions help SEO?

Not directly, according to Google. In a webmaster hangout on 21 December 2018, John Mueller said a mention is not a link and does not pass any PageRank. Asked in May 2020 whether unlinked citations help rankings, he replied: usually not, in his opinion.

Their SEO value is as link opportunities. A journalist who has already chosen to name a brand is more likely to add a link than one who has never heard of it.

## Why they matter for AI search

Language models learn from and retrieve text, and a mention is text whether or not it links. Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions had a Spearman correlation of 0.664 with brand visibility in Google AI Overviews, against 0.218 for the number of backlinks. Ahrefs notes that correlation is not causation, but the gap suggests unlinked coverage matters for AI answers.

## How to turn mentions into links

Asking for a link on an existing mention is a form of link reclamation.

- Monitor mentions with a media monitoring tool or Google Alerts
- Check that a link would help the reader, for example to a cited study
- Contact the writer or editor with the exact URL and why it is useful
- Accept a refusal, as many publishers have fixed linking policies

## Example

A national newspaper quotes a road safety charity's cyclist casualty figures but links only to the government dataset. A short note to the reporter pointing to the charity's analysis page, which explains how the figures were calculated, gives a clear reason to add the link.
