Content syndication
Content syndication is the republishing of an article on other websites after it first appears. In digital PR it usually means a story spreading from one outlet to sister titles or partner sites. In content marketing it means licensing articles to other publishers to reach a wider audience than the original site.

How does syndication work in digital PR?
Large publishing groups share stories across their titles, so a piece placed with one regional site can appear on several sister sites, sometimes with a new headline and with or without the original link. Aggregators such as MSN and Yahoo News also republish partner content. Each copy is visible coverage, but it is the same story, so reports should separate original pieces from syndicated copies.
What does Google say about syndicated content?
Google changed its guidance in May 2023. Its documentation now says the canonical link element is not recommended for those who want to avoid duplication by syndication partners, because the pages are often very different, and that the most effective solution is for partners to block indexing of the content.
In July 2023 Google's Search Liaison clarified that this did not mean publishers should stop syndicating. A publisher that is concerned about a partner's copy outranking its own should ask the partner to use noindex.
How to report syndicated coverage
- Group every copy of a story under the original article
- Record which copies keep the link and which drop it
- Check whether each copy is indexed before counting its link
- Report reach for the original, not the sum of every copy
Example
A survey on commuting costs runs on one regional news site and is republished on six sister titles in the same group within a day. A report that lists seven separate wins overstates the result. One that shows a single story with six syndicated copies, and notes which ones link, gives a fair picture.
