Google Merchant Center (GMC)

Google Merchant Center is the Google platform where retailers upload and manage product data, such as titles, prices, availability and images, so their products can appear across Google. It powers free product listings on Search, the Shopping tab, Maps, YouTube and Gemini, and supplies the product data behind Shopping ads and Performance Max.

What does Merchant Center do?

It holds a retailer's product catalogue for Google. Products arrive through data sources, which Google used to call feeds: a file, a spreadsheet, an e-commerce platform connection, the API, or product details crawled from the retailer's website. Each product needs attributes such as an ID, title, price, availability and image, and must meet Google's product policies. Problems show under the Needs attention tab.

Free listings and Shopping ads

In April 2020 Google announced that the Shopping tab would consist mainly of free listings, starting in the US that month and expanding globally by the end of the year. Products in Merchant Center can appear free wherever they meet the requirements, alongside any paid campaigns.

Paid Shopping ads need a Merchant Center account linked to Google Ads, product data refreshed at least every 30 days and compliance with the Shopping ads policies. They are charged per click and use the product data, not keywords, to decide when to show. Any campaign created inside Merchant Center itself is a Performance Max campaign, and the same data feeds Demand Gen product ads and dynamic remarketing.

What happened to Merchant Center Next?

Google moved every retailer to a redesigned version called Merchant Center Next by September 2024, renaming Destinations as Marketing methods and Feeds as Data sources. In July 2026 it dropped the word Next, and the platform is now simply Google Merchant Center.

Example

A cycling retailer's product titles read 'Model X2 Black'. Rewriting them in Merchant Center as 'Brand X2 hybrid bike, 54cm aluminium frame, black' gives Google the words shoppers use, which helps the products match more searches in Shopping ads and free listings and gives AI shopping answers accurate details to work from.
